Client: The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp
Description: Digital Collage w/ Scanned Imagery
The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp is an adventure tourism business that offers accommodation and bespoke wilderness experiences in the UNESCO South Western NZ World Heritage area. — While establishing their first adventure packages, Base Camp recognised a need to advertise them before any imagery was available — and with the available stock images unable to capture the relevant activities, I was tasked with finding a solution.
As a result, I suggested an original artwork for each adventure, deciding on a series of digital collages generated from an archive of old magazines I had compiled. — Using scanned ‘found imagery’ enabled us to include high-quality photography while preventing copyright infringements (and saving us the expense of purchasing a suite of stock imagery). Another advantage of this approach was that it allowed for relatively short turnaround times, this being useful considering the volume of artwork to be made and the ongoing nature of this brief.
Technical advantages aside, the visual qualities of these collages proved successful in their ability to communicate a sense of informality, simplicity, and fun — and appeal to the nostalgia of a more simple time — consistent with the brand pathos and their want to encourage an increasingly digital world to embrace the simple pleasures of the outdoors.

Client: Crosson Architects
Description: Print Advertisement
I was approached by Crosson Architects to design their advertisement for the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron Brochure. This solution involved a new approach to their wordmark, and a sophisticated response to appeal to the readers of this publication.
Their previous wordmark uses an old version of Futura centered, in capitals, with positive tracking — which feels static and traditional. Perhaps fitting for a legal office, but not for the approachable, forward thinking architecture studio they are. I also noticed that their previous symmetrical wordmark was restricting, as whenever it was used in a more dynamic asymmetrical layout, the compositions felt unbalanced.
Not wanting to stray far from their existing identity — I used an updated version of Futura (to feel of it’s time) in lower case (to be more approachable), negative tracking (to maximise negative space), and used their existing brand orange and ‘CA’ symbol for recogition.

Client: Out of Touch
Description: Exhibition Identity
Out of Touch was a multi-disciplinary art exhibition by a collective of young artists and fashion designers, showing textile works, paintings and interactive pieces. My role in this was to create their identity, resulting in the production of a website, instagram page — a suite of print publications including flyers, posters, brochures, and price sheets. As well as vinyl lettering for the interactive components.
A highlight of this project was the opportunity to make use of the fashion designer's knowledge of textile processes, leading to the idea of printing onto fabric via heat-sublimation. This technique was used to create small souvenir prints and a large wall banner at the entrance — proving a useful way to echo the materiality of the exhibited textile works (and catch people's attention).

Client: The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp
Description: Signage & Wayfinding
The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp has 14 huts for guest accommodation and a communal building housing the shared ammenities. This project was a response to a need for wayfinding signage and a system to label the huts. The design was informed by the wood routed signs of the region’s hiking trails, featuring simple, bold, round, and friendly typography.

Student Project
Description: Identity
The brief was to create an identity for a hypothetical community initiative — my idea was inspired by a chat with a lecturer who mentioned their concerns surrounding international students. Despite their enthusiasm for the class and talents, they struggled to make social connections with local students.
As a former international student, I identified with the challenge of trying to fit in somewhere new and decided to dream up a solution. The result — an elective paper where local students collaborate with international students to create an exhibition inspired by the design practices of their cultural origins.
This gave me a lot to work with for an identity — notably for the name 'Mosaic', to capture the idea of differences coming together to create something new (I also enjoyed the design and visual connotations). For the typography, I chose 'Noto Sans' — famous for supporting over 1,000 languages. From this typeface I arranged glyphs from multiple languages to create arrangements that appeared optically similar to the word 'Mosaic', further reinforcing this idea of differences coming together to create something new.
